Motorized Scooters and/or GO-PEDS in University Estates
Written by Elaine Powell

Several boys and girls have been observed recently riding motorized scooters and/or go-peds around the streets of University Estates. According to Florida law, motorized scooters, go-peds, and pocket bikes CANNOT be legally operated on public roadways, sidewalks, or bicycle paths. They can ONLY be operated on private property (e.g. driveways and yards), and only with the permission of the homeowner.

It is not against the law to possess, use, or operate a motorized scooter, go-ped, or pocket bike, as long as you are on private property. Therefore, it is not against the law for businesses to sell them.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department has been notified about the children in our subdivision driving these types of vehicles. If caught, the operators could be issued a moving traffic citation, or could be arrested and be required to attend a mandatory court date. In addition, parents who knowingly allow a juvenile who has no driver's license to operate a motor vehicle on public streets may be cited for a violation of Florida Statute 322.35, "Permitting an Unauthorized Minor to Drive," which is an arrestable misdemeanor.

UCF PegasusOn December 7, the University Estates Homeowners Association was invited to a University of Central Florida Community Council meeting at the just-opened UCF Pegasus Health clinic.  This clinic opened for business on November 7.  Its location is 3400 Quadrangle Blvd, just a half mile west of UCF’s main entrance, next to the Hampton Inn.  Pegasus Health is part of the new UCF College of Medicine.  Its focus is primary care with a few specialties.  Primary care is mostly general internal medicine and family practice.  While it is sparsely manned at this time, it will grow as its patient list increases.
